How I Work: Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy that incorporates mindful awareness, self-attunement and interpersonal attunement literally changes our brains. It enhances the very circuits involved in insight and empathy, creating an integrated state of brain function. In mindful awareness, habitual patterns held in the body and personality are witnessed without judgement, offering the possibility of release, relief and transformation.
Instinctively, human beings react to pain by pushing it away. We create internal walls between ourselves and the experiences that cause discomfort in our bodies, our minds and our hearts.
Healing occurs when we authentically open toward that which is hurting us. We can learn to do this skillfully with mindful awareness. As we experience the truth of the pain, we can better integrate it into the fabric of our life. When we deeply accept what is, suffering diminishes. This does not mean the pain disappears. It can, however, become a portal to deeper meaning and a sense of power. What was once a difficult source of isolation can become a thread to our interconnectedness.
